Internally illuminated street name sign (fluorescent)

1.0       General

1.1       An illuminated street name sign shall display the designated street name clearly and legibly in the daylight hours without being energized and at night when energized.  The sign assembly shall consist of a six- or eight-foot aluminum housing.  White translucent sign faces with the street name applied shall be installed in hinged doors on the sides of the sign for easy access to perform general cleaning and maintenance operations.  Illumination shall be two (2) high output fluorescent lamp fixtures.

2.0       Mechanical Construction

2.1       The sign shall be constructed using a weatherproof, aluminum housing consisting of an extruded aluminum top with a minimum thickness of .140” x 10 ¾” deep (including the drip edge).  The extruded aluminum bottom is .094” thick x 5 7/8” deep.  The ends of the housing shall be cast aluminum with a minimum thickness of .250”.  A six-foot sign shall be 72 5/8” long and 22 5/16” tall and not weigh more than 77 pounds.  An eight-foot sign shall be 96 5/8” long and 22 5/16” tall and not weigh more than 92 pounds.  All corners are continuous TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welded to provide a weatherproof seal around the entire housing.

2.2       The door shall be constructed of extruded aluminum.  Two corners are continuous TIG welded with the other two screwed together to make one side of the door removable for installation of the sign face.  The door is fastened to the housing on the bottom by a full length, .040” x 1 1/8” open stainless steel hinge.  The door shall be held secure onto a 3/4” wide by 5/32” thick neoprene gasket by two or three (four or six total for two-way sign) quarter-turn fasteners to form a watertight seal between the door and the housing.

2.3       The sign face shall be constructed of .125” white translucent polycarbonate.  The letters shall be 8” upper case and 6” lower case.  The sign face legend background shall be translucent green, #PT472, or equivalent, electronically cuttable film, applied to the front of the sign face.  The legend shall be framed by a white polycarbonate border.

2.4       All surfaces of the sign shall be etched and primed in accordance to industry standards before receiving appropriate color coats of industrial enamel.

2.5       All fasteners and hardware shall be corrosion resistant stainless steel.  No tools are required for routine maintenance such as a lamp change.

3.0       Electrical

3.1       Lamps shall be two (2) T12/800 MA High Output.

3.2       The ballast shall be encased and potted and shall be rated for 800 MA.

3.3       The lamp sockets shall be of the spring-loaded, snap-in type with rubber gaskets to prevent water damage.

3.4       All wiring shall be secured by insulated wire compression nuts.

3.5       A wire entrance junction box shall be supplied with the sign assembly.  The box may be supplied mounted to the exterior or interior of the sign and provide a weather tight seal.

4.0       Brackets and Mounting

4.1       An illuminated street name sign may be attached to a mast arm and/or span wires.  If the sign is attached to a mast arm or span wire that is perpendicular to the street that the sign faces, a two-point support assembly shall be used.  If the illuminated street name sign is attached to a mast arm or span wire that is diagonal to the street that the sign faces then a single point support assembly shall be used.
