1.0 Four-Way, Mercury Vapor
Internally Illuminated Traffic Signs 1.1 Standard size 24 x 30
(custom sizes are available upon request). 1.2 MessagesAll standard traffic
sign messages are available. 2.0 General Description 2.1 Four-way traffic signs shall be
capable of displaying four messages in four directions, at one time. 2.2 Messages shall be permanently
visible. Daytime illumination is
not necessary. 2.3 Four-way traffic signs are
serviceable from either of the two access doors, and all components shall be
easily accessible. 3.0 Functional Requirements 3.1 All messages shall be clearly
legible, attracting attention under any lighting conditions. 3.2 The sign shall consist of an
aluminum sign housing and two door assemblies; four traffic sign faces (blank or
printed messages); complete electrical enclosures; all necessary hardware (less
final mounting); and lighting system. 3.3 Lighting will be provided by one
(1) 250-watt mercury vapor lamp, deluxe white. 3.4 All ballasts shall be encased and
potted, and shall be provided by a major manufacturer with proven dependability. Ballasts shall be rated 250 watts, 120 volts, 2.4 amps, 60
cycle. 3.5 Sockets shall be porcelain, mogul
base with a ½ pipe nipple mounting. 3.6 All wiring shall be 600 volts, 90°C,
#18 AGW soft annealed copper wire. 3.7 All wire connections shall be
made with insulated, compression wire nuts. 3.8 All primary wiring terminations
shall be made to a barrier type terminal block. 3.9 An internal on/off switch shall
be provided for maintenance. 4.0 Mechanical Construction 4.1 The basic sign housing shall
consist of a top and a bottom pan formed from 3003 T-12 aluminum sheet, .063
in thickness. 4.2 Top and bottom pans are
continuous TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welded in each corner to four legs of 6063
T-6 extruded aluminum. 4.3 Internal framing consists of four
1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 1 1/8 aluminum angles bolted to the top pan and welded
to each of the four legs, then bolted through the top pan to a 1-1/2"
iron mounting hub. 4.4 Wire entry shall be through the
mounting hub into the lamp box containing the terminal block. 4.5 Bottom reinforcement shall be
achieved by the ballast shelf, formed of .063 aluminum and riveted to the
bottom by ten (10) 3/16 x 3/8 aluminum barrel rivets. 4.6 Wire shall be routed through a
3/8 aluminum flexible conduit from the ballast to the lamp box in the top of
sign. 4.7 A light diffuser of 1/8
prismatic polycarbonate plastic shall be mounted around the bulb.
This diffuser shall provide even lighting to each of the four sign faces. 4.8 Two doors of .125 extruded
aluminum shall have one side removable to gain access to the sign face.
(No required for normal maintenance). 4.9 The two doors shall be mounted to
two opposite sides of the sign case, each by two 3 x 1 1/16 open aluminum
hinges, and one #3, stainless steel quarter-turn link lock. 4.10 The remaining sides shall have face retainers
fabricated of .063 aluminum. The
retainers shall be bolted to the housing bottom by two #10, 24 x 1/2"
stainless steel nuts and bolts and shall secure the sign face into its track. 4.11 Drainage shall be provided by four 1 drain
screens located at the corners of the housing bottom. 4.12 Finish on sign housings shall be two coats of
exterior sign enamel, applied after the surface material is acid-etched and
primed with zinc-chromate primer. 4.13 Sign face shall be of .125 white translucent
polycarbonate with messages printed on the exterior.
